Co-workers talked super bowl all yesterday. I didn't care. Work was still getting done, but our morning meeting took forever because of it. Every monday during football season it's like this apparently. But today, again, our meeting was going on an hour for what is normally a 15 minute meting......because football. Normally I stay quiet and try to bring people around to following F1 or indycar or something, and someof them do try to listen and I do catch the odd game of handegg. But usually I stay out of it and if anyone wants to know about whatever news article I'm reading abou F1, I'll answer questions. But this morning it was getting excessive and I had enough. I got asked who my favorite team was for this coming season (REALLY?!?!? ALREADY?!?!? IT JUST ENDED!!!!!!) and I responded "Well Williams is still my favorite this year but I think Lotus and Sauber are some good dark horses for midfield points" and everyone looked at me like I had three heads. Some quickly understood I was referring to racing, but others I had to explain about the testing beginning for the 2015 season. We were *juuuuuuust* about to get back on track when the exchange happened.
Co-worker: I don't see how you can follow any form of racing, even nascar. It's just not too interesting. And hey, they rest of us enjoy talking about football. Maybe you should try watching a few games instead of obsessing over cars.
Me: I would like to point out that out of everyone in this circle, I am the only one who actually plays and participates in the sport he follows. When I critique decisions and strategies I at least know what it's like to be on the track, strapped in a car, and seeing just how close the wall looks at 140mph. Meanwhile you sit in your living room and scream at the TV and pretend like you'd know what to do without the helicopter cam, instant replays, a volume control for the sound of the stadium, and commercial breaks.
The meeting was wrapped up shortly after.

Maybe you should try watching a few games instead of obsessing over cars.
As someone who isn't a fan of either Football (either the hand egg or dive grass variety) or racing, my response to his query probably would have been something along the lines of; "Why don't you shut the fuck up."
So congrats on being far more eloquent than I, in the same situation.

Because grown men throwing a ball and running around in a rectangle is so interesting.

Shrug. Not really a burn to me, but I can see how you might consider it.
I didn't realize playing a sport was a pre-requisite for being a fan.
And honestly, I can't stand racing either. It's just insanely boring to me. Everyone has differing opinions though.

I'll admit it
I had to google him to put a face to that name

This is something that has always perplexed me, more so lately with how Sunday's game turned out. People don't seem to realize that each of the coaches and players they're criticizing know 10 times more about the sport they're playing than many of the spectators ever will. Yet they will continue to act like experts and critique every play. I was certainly confused when I saw a pass when I was expecting to see a rush, but I figured the coach and players knew what they were trying to do. It's only what they do everyday...

I don't mind it, but I hate how long they talk about what *they* would've done and I don't think any of them ever played. I know my perspective of racing moves changed drastically once I started autocrossing and doing track time and driving other cars in anger at events and whatnot. I know a bit more about what it means to have restricted head movement because of a seat + helmet + harness + cage. I know what it's like to make that split second decision to alter your braking point or line because you just feel like the car is better that way. Meanwhile these guys act like being in a nice, calm living room with a helicopter view of everything, multiple analysts providing extra feedback, and pulling up stats left and right means they'd be a good coach.

It isn't, but I don't see why I'm criticized for liking and playing the sport I follow while everyone else does nothing but waste my time because they are passionate about watching something. I tolerated it yesterday because super bowl and all that.

You could say similar about Nascar "guys driving around in circles".
But F1 and Indy? Those races are an artform

You should read up on Berger, he's a master troll.
He once threw Senna's briefcase out of a flying helicopter, for the lols.

That's understandable, and I think would be the case anywhere you go. Like when people at work start to talk about American Idol or some shit. I just walk away because I have no desire to have that conversation. You tolerated it yesterday. And, if it is interfering with work, you were right to shut it down.

I don't hate football and it can be fun to watch but why is it the ONLY thing people can even talk about? The game ended sunday night, there was some usual monday morning chit chat, aaaaaand we move on during working hours. Everything's cool.

I was talking to someone at work and then others joined in and it went on and on then started to drift off topic so I loudly said 'right, I'm bored of this conversation' and walked off through the middle of them. Felt great.

Agreed. And it doesn't bother me when they talk about it for the first 15 minutes on mondays when we're waiting for people to show up and get a cup of coffee or whatever. Or when they talk about it while doing their job. But I can't stand making these morning meetinsg so long to talk about a game none of them even cared about, really. No one was hyped and excited for it on friday, why do all of us have to not get tings started for an hour to whine about something no one really liked?
![]() 02/03/2015 at 10:37 |

Any statement longer than 1 sentence is not a burn, but it's nice to see you got them to shut up.

I don't hate football, I hate being forced to listen to people talk about something they watch obsessively and delay what I need to do and then have them turn around and insult what I actively do as well as watch.

If you really want to troll, maybe ask about Patrese, Alesi, or in a very, very obscure way, Andrea Moda or even Minardi.
But I know what you go through, except that over here in Brazil is over soccer. I like soccer, even cheer for Palmeiras, go to stadiums and so, but my number one sport is racing... I follow F1, Indy, WEC, WRC and many others (when I can). But when a country have a sport as a religion, I'm a island in a sea of others.
So I try to talk about both.
(BTW, I also love Football, and yes, yesterday morning topic was the SB49)

Yeah......I kinda wish I had just left it as something like "I'm the only one who plays the sport he watches" but I was frustrated with hearing day 2 of the bitching about a throw that should've been a running play.

You're not being criticized for liking racing. You're being criticized for being THAT GUY who can't stand when there is a conversation that doesn't involve himself going on.
So you don't like football. Big whoop. Just stay out of the conversation and let everyone else talk about the stuff they like.

It is rather amazing that I play fantasy formula ones with Oppo's despite knowing nothing of the sport. My driver is from Ghana, because Ghana has a great racing program am I correct?

I actually don't mind football and watch it from time to time. But if you read, the problem I have is how this keeps delaying our mandatory meeting every day and they make it take forever by talking about something they just watch, they don't even do. I don't force them to listen to my talk of what races I go to or how I did the weekend before or anything. If I do talk about it, I wait for us to be in the lab, actually doing work, and I tend to keep it brief and simple since I know they'r enot too interested in the finer details. And I don't mind when they talk football in the lab either because, again, we're doing work and they keep things simple. But to force me to listen to it for an hour instead of just getting our meeting done and over with because of a few "bad calls"? I'm sorry but that was yesterday and I had shit to get done after the meeting we have to have. The safety and quality talk is mandatory, hearing how one guy would've made "the RIGHT call" isn't.

FUCK THE PATS!!!!! Actually no, but I did use a lot of salt this morning at work so you aren't wrong, I was quite salty this morning.

A friend of mine, who I was dating at the time, is a big football/Packers fan. I would go to a sports bar with her to watch games, although I didn't pay attention to the game really. So she finally agreed to come watch the Canadian Grand Prix with me.
After watching for a bit she asked, "So you really find it interesting just watching them drive in circles?"
My response, "So you just enjoy watching dudes run back and forth along the same rectangle of grass?"
She conceded that it was a fair point. Not to mention that was one hell of a race! Those last 10 laps were awesome.

To be fair, most American guys have have played football before. If not on a team, then with flags or just in the backyard.
You may say that's not on the same level as the NFL, but track days aren't on the same level as F1, either.
![]() 02/03/2015 at 11:16 |

Eh, backyard football isn't even close to the real thing though. Unless you're in the pads and are on some sort of field, I don't think you're playing football that resembles what an NFL or college player goes through. Likewise, driving like a jackass on the freeway doesn't resemble nascar, but flinging around a stripped out econobox with a rollcage on an oval while wearing your firesuit and gear can be. A neon on a 1/3 mile oval is still oval racing. Not quite NASCAR or Nationwide but you get a lot more respect for what's going on and are more sympathetic to "bad" moves since you realize you made those mistakes and more at half their speed....
![]() 02/03/2015 at 11:20 |
|
I would say a neon on a small oval is like organized flag football on a marked field.

Me in that meeting:

All I could think of while reading your post.

Also, there are a total of 11 minutes of true football play in a 3-4 hour game..
Auto Racing (any type) starts and doesn't stop until someone finishes the allotted time.

When you put it like that, it does sound interesting. What kind of ball? What kind of running around? Are there spikes on the side of the rectangle?
SO MANY QUESTIONS!
